Overview

This tour starts on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya, where Bangkok's alleys, temple compounds and canal-side villages still run at a local pace. You ride with Jamming Thailand Tours in a group capped at 10 people, following an English-speaking guide through back lanes rather than main roads. The cycling portion covers alleyways packed with stalls, a market visit and several temples, with the guide explaining Buddhism and the history of the communities along the way.

Midway there is a Thai lunch at a canal-side restaurant, included along with bottled water. After the meal the ride continues along the canal to a canal-side market, where the bicycles are loaded onto a longtail boat. The boat leg carries you past canal-side homes and communities, and if conditions are right you may spot an Asian water monitor on the banks. The tour finishes back at the original departure point, a shop on Thanon Itsaraphap in Bangkok Yai.

Cyclists riding beside a narrow canal in Thonburi, Bangkok

The whole thing runs 3.5 hours and suits travellers who want to see a side of the city they would struggle to find alone, with several reviewers saying exactly that. It involves more than 30 minutes of continuous cycling, and you need to be able to lift the bike, as the guide will help at obstacles but the route is not entirely barrier-free. Hotel transfer is not part of the package, so you make your own way to the meeting point.
