Overview

This 3.5 hour ride starts at 6 PM on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya. You get a bike, helmet, light and reflective clothing, then roll straight into the winding alleys for dinner at a local Thai family's restaurant. Groups are capped at 8 people with an English-speaking guide.

From there the route keeps moving. You stop at Wat Arun lit up for the night, cross the river by local ferry, ride to Wat Pho with its reclining Buddha, loop past the Grand Palace and into Pak Khlong Talat, the round-the-clock flower market piled with orchids, lilies and roses. Chinatown comes next, all neon and street food vendors, before a second ferry crossing and a slow ride back through back streets to the original departure point.

Reviewers repeatedly say the real draw is the ordinary streets and passageways, the parts of Bangkok a visitor would never find alone, plus a sit-down meal partway through rather than snacks on the move.

What To Expect From The Tour

A few practical points shape how this evening goes, from what to wear at the temples to how the bikes and dinner work.

  • Getting there. There is no hotel pickup or drop-off, so travellers make their own way to the meeting point on Thanon Itsaraphap in Thonburi. The operator asks everyone to arrive 15 minutes before the 6 PM start.
  • Pace and ability. You must be able to cycle, and the tour is not recommended for people with limited mobility. One reviewer noted a choice between a mountain bike and a city bike, and several said they felt safe at all times, with the route running through back streets and courtyards as well as the main sights.
  • What is covered. The price includes the bicycle, helmet, lights, reflective clothing, dinner, bottled water, ferry rides and entrance fees. Alcohol, soft drinks and gratuities are not included, so budget a little extra if you want a beer with the meal.
  • Clothing for temples. Knees and shoulders must be covered inside the temples, though coverings can be provided if you do not have them.
  • Group feel. The group is capped at 8 people in total.
  • Photos. Expect lit-up temple exteriors, the flower market and Chinatown neon, which all work well at night.

Common issues. The tour is not suitable for people with limited mobility or anyone unable to cycle, and unaccompanied minors cannot join. Drinks beyond bottled water, plus tips, are extra. Because the meeting point is on the Thonburi side of the river with no hotel transfer, travellers staying elsewhere need to factor in the cross-city trip before 6 PM.
